Any biography of Carel Fabritius (Dutch, 1622–1654) is necessarily short; there simply is not much known about him. He was born in Beemster, a small village in a muddy mess of a polder in the north of Holland.
As a young man, he studied with Rembrandt in Amsterdam, did his first paintings in the master’s studio, moved back to Beemster for a while, and eventually relocated to Delft.

He died in Delft at age 32 when an arsenal holding some 80,000 pounds of gunpowder exploded across the lane from his studio. Here we examine his output by looking at ten of his paintings in roughly chronological order.
